Making a good selection for countertops requires an eye for detail. Ordering a slab and hoping for the best is an expensive risk. When selecting granite, take color samples of the cabinet finish, wall paint, flooring and kitchen appliances to the showroom. Take pictures of those items if a sample isn't available. Place the samples on or around the granite to get a good idea of what the decorating combination looks like. Dark cabinetry like cherry wood with a black granite may overpower the kitchen. Get a light to medium, old-world look with beige granite speckled with browns, green and yellows. Go darker with an emerald pearl granite from Norway. This product is mostly dark green with flecks of gold, pink and gray.

The convenience of shopping online for granite is tempting, but it should not replace seeing the stone with your own eyes. Fine color patterns are difficult to photograph and the subtle differences in shades and textures may be missed. Even shopping in-store poses some challenge for color selection. Granite slabs of the same color and classification often vary greatly. Once you have chosen your preferred overall color, such as black, brown, blue, green or yellow, ask to see samples within that color subset. Get the color you want by choosing your own slab direct from the manufacturer.

Granite countertops add value to your home, but if the lighting is bad, it is hard to appreciate any selection. When choosing colors, consider the kitchen's lighting. If your kitchen has little or no natural light, select granite that has a significant amount of white or gold, or lots of light-colored specks. Dark colors like deep blue, mahogany and black look best in areas that receive substantial light. Track and pendant lighting make good lighting options to enhance the beauty of the stone.

Avoid Sticker Shock

When choosing granite countertops, you will see a variety of prices. Granite is one the hardest, most durable stones available, making it desirable amongst builders and homeowners. Rare colors and special treatments can push the price higher as well. Shop around for your favorite granite colors while considering the type of granite you need.
